FAQ: Function of Split Ring Commutator and Working Principles
The function of split ring commutator in a DC motor is to reverse the direction of current in the armature windings every half-turn. This keeps the torque acting in one direction, so the rotor continues to spin instead of rocking back and forth. Without a correctly designed split ring commutator, the motor would lose smooth, continuous rotation.
In a DC generator, the split ring commutator function is to mechanically rectify the internally generated AC voltage in the armature into DC output at the terminals. The commutator segments and brushes switch the connections so that the external circuit sees a unidirectional voltage, even though the induced EMF in each coil is alternating.
So, how does a split ring commutator work?
- The armature coils are connected to copper segments arranged around the shaft.
- Stationary brushes press lightly on the segment surface.
- As the rotor turns 180°, each coil’s connections swap from one brush to the other.
- This reverses the current in that coil at exactly the moment when the torque would otherwise reverse.
The result is that the magnetic force on the conductors always produces torque in the same rotational direction. XDC optimizes segment geometry, materials and surface finish so that this commutation is as smooth and spark-free as possible.
